It's the 70's!

It’s gonna be a week in the 70’s!  

 

No, not THOSE 70’s….the TEMPERATURE will be in the 70’s!  It’s Spring Fever season, not Disco Fever season!

 

Ahhh….can’t you just feel it? Sunshine and a balmy breeze gently embracing our cold, tired bones!  Actually, here in the mid-west, it’s more likely to be gale force winds whipping away at our lily white flesh, but hey….it’ll be in the 70’s!!!

 

That alone is cause for celebration after the frigid, arctic winter we just had.  We deserve a break from our parkas and mukluks.  And gosh…can we please forget the feeling of breathing in and feeling our nose hairs freeze up?

 

I have a feeling that many businesses will see their attendance down this week as employees call in sick with a ‘fever’.

Are Redheads Taking Over?

In 1997 Professor Jonathan Rees conducted a study of redheads at Edinburgh University.  He identified the ‘gene for red hair’, the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R), found on the 16^th chromosome.  He found that this single gene was responsible for red hair.  Red hair is actually a genetic mutation.  Huh?

 

With much relief, I now realize that we will probably never have to worry about thousands of Lucille Balls invading our planet since less than four percent of the world’s population has red hair.  And in the United States, it’s only two percent of our population.  Whew!  You can now wipe that off of your list of things to worry about!

 

Some red headed factoids:

1)   Redheads have the fewest number of hairs on their heads…next being blonds and brunettes with the most.

2)   Red hair and green eyes were thought to be the sign of a witch, a werewolf or a vampire during the Middle Ages.

3)   The highest percentage of natural redheads in the world is in Scotland with 13%, followed closely

      by Ireland with 10%.

4)   A 2002 study found that redheads are harder to sedate than any other people

 requiring twenty percent more anesthesia.

5)   Redheads don’t turn grey.  Red hair turns sandy, then white.  They are also found to lose their color later in life than people with other hair colors.

6)   There is a belief that redheads are prone to industrial deafness.  This actually could be true as the melanocytes are found in the middle ear.

 

Red headed people, you can honestly say, are special and unique!  They stand out in a crowd, whether they sport a bright orange carrot top or a more subtle, auburn color.  They usually get a little extra attention.

 

The thing is…we are all special.  We may not have a head full of beautiful, red hair, but we are all unique….however we don’t necessarily stand out in a crowd.

This person is the one who holds your life together and goes above and beyond their job description for you.  You appreciate him or her more than they probably realize.  But…..you know you don’t acknowledge them enough.  When was the last time you really said ‘thank you’? 

 

Coming soon is a day made especially for them.  April 21^st is Administration Assistant’s Day.  Some may think it’s hokey, but we don’t think so.  Some times, this type of holiday is what helps grab our attention and makes us realize just how much we do appreciate the people who make our lives easier.  It’s a day we can really show them our appreciation for all they do.

Here Comes the Sun!

What's that big orange thing up there in the sky?  Could it be???  We haven't seen it for....MONTHS!  It's....it's....it's.....

THE SUN!!!!

Okay, maybe I’m being a little over dramatic, but this is exciting stuff for us mid-westerners!  We’ve been clouded over and snowed in for almost half a year for crying out loud! 

 

We’re ready to break out of our cocoons and stretch our wings!  Maybe even shed a bit of that stored up winter fat.  We need to open up our homes and let the fresh, warm air of spring come in and cleanse the winter remains of holiday cooking and fireplaces. 

 

Our bodies, muscles and lungs are begging us to take them outside and work in the yard, jog, ride our bikes, play softball….or anything else that will allow us to maybe break a little sweat and feel good about it.  And goodness knows that we’re ready to kick those crazy kids outside to run off some steam!

"As the Stomach Churns"

It’s time, once again for the continuing saga of, “As the Stomach Churns” (insert sappy organ music here). 

 

If you will remember, when we last visited our heroine, she was in the throes of despair.  Tormented and in agony, Gwendolyn, who was left in charge of the Bernstein Family Reunion, cried and fretted over how, in the name of everything holy, would she ever be able to pull it all off in time!?  She had the date, the time, the place, all the games and activities planned, but something was….missing!  It needed something else.  But what WAS it? 

 

So today we find poor, stressed Gwendolyn on her knees begging for ideas…anything that would make the reunion a success!  

 

Suddenly a beautiful blue light appeared coming in through the window!  It was…it was…her Family Reunion Fairy Godmother, Cindy Taylor (who was dressed in a magnificent, flowing, iridescent blue gown complete with sequins - she looked totally stunning)! 

 

“My child, (she called everyone that) why are you crying?”  Ms Taylor asked.

 

“Oh Family Reunion Fairy Godmother, I don’t know what to do!  I’m suppose to put together the Bernstein Family Reunion and I need something else…something to make it an extra special day!  What ever shall I do!?”

 

“Fret not, my child!” exclaimed Family Reunion Fairy Godmother, Cindy Taylor.  And with that, she whipped out her magic wand (that looked amazingly like a peacock feather), and waved it over Gwendolyn’s head.

 

Suddenly, T-Shirts appeared!!  Beautiful T-Shirts!  One for every member of the Bernstein Family, from the littlest to the biggest (there was even one that would fit cousin, Ned).  Each shirt had the family mascot on the front (which happened to be a fuzzy bear) and the family name printed on the back.

 

“Oh Family Reunion Fairy Godmother!  How can I ever thank you?” cried Gwendolyn.

 

“Oh my child, that’s simple!  Just be sure to tell everyone you know about your Fairy Godmother.  Tell them also, that I’m not only the Family Reunion Fairy Godmother, but the Fairy Godmother for Sports Teams, Businesses, Church Groups, Bike Clubs, Sororities, Trips to the Zoo….and anything else you can think of!  Tell them to call me any time at 866-943-4377."

 

And with that, Family Reunion Fairy Godmother, Cindy Taylor, waved her magic peacock feather and vanished in a cloud of blue sequined vapor, leaving Gwendolyn with a satisfied, happy smile.  Gwendolyn and the whole Bernstein Family lived happily ever after!

What's the Job of a Leprechaun?

Another ‘did you know’….Saint Patrick wasn’t even Irish…he was British.  They say he was probably born in Scotland or Wales.  And that thing about him driving the snakes out of Ireland …well….that’s a myth too.  

 

Well Faith and Begorrah….I won’t let all that spoil MY St. Paddy’s Day!  We Americans may not have all our facts straight, but we’ll still have our green beer and corned beef! (oh yeah…in Ireland, they don’t celebrate by eating corned beef either – what the heck?!)

Chicken Poop!

Are You Contagious?

I believe our actions influence others.  Don’t believe me? 

 

I use to ride my bike around the block about twice a year and felt pretty proud of myself.  That is until I talked to some friends that were avid riders who rode (gulp) every day!  They were so excited about riding and talked about it all the time, and their enthusiasm was so…well…enthusiastic!  I starting thinking that maybe there was a bit more to this bike riding thing - maybe I wasn’t giving it much of a shot.  So, I started riding more often, going farther and having a great time.  THEN my friends started telling me about rides across an entire state! Seriously?  Are they nuts?!  Before I knew it, I was on my first ride across an entire state!  Over 400 miles in one week!  I was in love! 

 

Since then, I have become just as enthusiastic as my friends are.  Because of my own energetic communication to some of my non-riding friends they too have joined the ranks of cyclists riding every day and yes, a couple are even doing the week long state rides with me now!

 

So like I said, our actions influence others.  All our actions, including the bad ones.  Yikes!  That sure puts on the pressure!  Remember that saying, “If momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy”?   Momma’s actions influence the rest of the family.  It’s true for all of us. 

 

Enthusiasm is contagious, but so is a rotten, complaining attitude.  Make it a choice to have a good attitude and spread happiness in your world… not doom and gloom.  Share your passions with enthusiasm!  It’ll rub off on your co-workers, family, friends and even strangers you meet along the way!

Poor Navin.  I guess he doesn’t realize that hardly anyone looks at the phone book now…we all look things up online.  When the new phone books arrive at our office, I can’t get anyone to take them.  Unless it’s to use as a stand for their computer screen or maybe a door stop…I think I may have seen one being used as home base at a company softball game once.
